How to Make Coffeehouse Drinks at Home // DIY + Dairy Free

Morning. Bustling. Energy. Hope. Office workers. Teachers. College Students. Moms. Fresh ground coffee. Warm pastries. Chatter. A leather chair. View overlooking Main street. The local coffee shop.

Nothing beats the familiar experience of the local coffee shop. The heartbeat of many towns both big and small, it provides a familiarity and comfort to the demands of the day-to-day. One of my favorite places in the whole wide world is the coffee shop.

I've been in coffee shops all over the US and in parts of Europe and what I love the most about them is no matter where you go, they're generally all the same. Each have their own quarks and uniqueness, but all beat to the same drum sharing the same sights, smells, and sounds. A coffee shop is a window into the soul of a town and gives one the realization that no matter where you're at in the world, people are all generally the same. We are all working, striving, and carrying out our days with generally the same aspirations. People want to be loved, respected, valued, and cared for.... end of story.

Since becoming a stay-at-home mom I don't get as many chances to visit the coffee shop (no worries though, I still find ways to get there!) so I decided to create my own coffee house experience at home. Not only does making your own delicious coffee drinks at home save money, but there is a unique satisfaction in making a cappuccino for yourself.

Below is a list of my top 3 favorite coffeehouse drinks as well as a dairy-free alternative to the classic cappuccino.

Top 3 Favorite Coffee Drinks + How To

1. The Pour-Over

This method is a cup of coffee down to the bare minimum... the basics. I discovered this method through my local coffee shop and when I interviewed the owner for a shop local experiment and learned that the best way to extract the most flavor from the beans is the pour over method... so here it goes.

All that's needed is a tea kettle, a pour over funnel like this one, with the coffee filters, your favorite coffee mug, and as always, some freshly ground coffee beans.

Instructions:

Fill tea kettle with water and place on stove top. Turn heat to high and bring water to a boil. In the meantime, place your pour-over funnel on top of mug and line with a paper filter. Measure out 1 heaping tablespoon of your favorite, freshly ground coffee into the paper filter. When water has reaching boiling point, turn off stove, and remove tea kettle from heat. Pour hot water over grounds and repeat as many times needed to fill your mug with delicious coffee. Viola! Now you're ready to enjoy the most amazing cup of coffee!

2. Cold Brew

Hands down my favorite coffee drink! So easy to make and delicious in a unique way as compared to hot coffee. This method brews ground coffee with cold water and ice bringing out flavors that go unnoticed in a hot cup of coffee. Undertones of chocolate, citrus fruits, and many more.

Instructions :

Place 1/2 a cup of ice in the bottom of a quart size mason jar.

Line the mason jar with a cold brew filter like this one. Inside the filter place a 1/4 cup of freshly ground espresso and 1/2 a cup of freshly ground medium roast (the higher the quality the better).

Tie off the top of the filter an hang the top just outside the jar off the edge so as to ensure no water gets inside of the filter and coffee grounds don't leach out into the water.

Fill the mason jar with filtered water up to the top. Place a lid on the jar and put cold brew in the fridge.

Steep for 8-48 hours. My sweet spot is 12 hours.

Once cold brew is finished brewing wring filter out to extract as much cold brew out as possible. Dispose the coffee grounds into the compost or garbage. Rinse out filter and allow to air dry.

Enjoy cold brew on its own or sweetened with your favorite sweetener.

3. The Classic Cappuccino

This is a staple coffee drink in any coffee shop and once you learn to make one at home, lets just say it's a serious game changer! See my dairy-free alternative below.

Instructions:

Brew freshly ground espresso in a stove top espresso maker. Mine makes enough for 4 servings.

In the mean time, heat 1/3 cup (amount per serving) of whole milk in a small saucepan on low to medium heat. Do not boil milk.

Now it's time to make the froth. I'm using a Miroco Milk Frother as shown in the picture. This has been one of the BEST purchases I've made and it makes this step super easy. Just fill the froth canister with whole milk to the indicated line on the inside of the canister. Place lid on top and press the power button. Froth is done in about 60 seconds. It also makes cold froth for frappuccinos, and heats milk for things like hot cocoa.

Once the three elements are prepared above it is now time to assemble the cappuccino. A cappuccino is made up of thirds...

1/3 cup of brewed espresso - placed first in the espresso mug
1/3 cup of hot milk - poured into the espresso
1/3 cup of milk froth - layer on top of espresso and milk in mug with a spoon.

Dairy-Free Alternative:

1/3 cup of espresso
OMIT the hot whole milk and replace with
2/3 cup of froth made with coconut creamer in either original flavor or french vanilla as shown below.
